Runner is the Sea and Cake’s 10th album due out in September on Chi town label Thrill Jockey. The Chicago band has been a favorite of mine since I arrived here nearly 18 years ago, discovering them with my friend Frank. Their music is highlighted with Sam Prekop’s airy and featherlight vocals and defined by the dreamy guitar work of Prekop and Archer Prewitt.
The first two tracks from Runner are indicative of their post jazz quartet style with electronic and dream rock elements while being polar opposites. Harps, the first single, is as close to shoegazer as the group has come since the introduction of the electronic infusion on 1997’s the Fawn. It’s summertime with the car windows rolled down in the country. But On and On is a bit harder, and loose thought not quite reckless. ‘Cavalier’ would be appropriate, especially since this is a word Prekop has been quoted saying is his new approach to writing for the band (thank you Pitchfork for that tidbit). Check them both out. It’s new music I love.
