For the past few years about this time of year I’ve done a flashback post to music of my youth. In continuation of this, I bring you again to 2 decades ago, when I entered my 20s. Here’s goes a rewind to 1993.
I was in college, finishing my sophomore year and beginning junior year. In the news, Janet Reno became the first female attorney general. Czechoslovakia was no more, as the Czech republic and Slovakia became separate countries. The World Trade Center bombing, which was the precursor to the events of 9/11, occurred early in the year. NAFTA was signed into law as the year closed. 1993 was also the birth year for Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown, American Idol Scott McCreery, actress Taylor Momsen and three members of current boy band One Direction. It was the year we lost Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillepsie, Audrey Hepburn, and River Phoenix, with the year closing with the brutal murder of transgender folk hero Brandon Teena.
And then there was the music. Depche Mode debuted at #1 with Songs of Faith and Devotion, and Whitney clocked in 14 weeks at number 1 with I Will Always Love You. Mia Zapata of the Gits was murdered. Pop shlock/ guilty pleasure Ace of Base released The Sign. Pearl Jam’s Vs. was released. The original line up of Guns N Roses played their last show together. And Nirvana unleashed their third album In Utero and recorded their amazing Unplugged show that ended up being released after Cobain’s death the next year.
In addition to what I mentioned above, some amazing life altering music was unleashed in 1993. Smashing Pumpkins supersonic masterpiece Siamese Dream. Liz Phair’s debut Exile In Guyville. PJ Harvey’s brutal Rid of Me. Underworld’s Dubnobasswithmyheadman. The Breeder’s Last Splash. Polvo’s Today’s Active Lifestyles. Sophomore efforts from Blur, Slowdive and Tool, and the return (and subsequent first break-up) of New Order. Oh, and a little debut album from some British group called Radiohead. So much that became classics.
So here are some of my favorites from 2 decades ago. 20- something of the best of 1993.
