SOTD: Jay-Z, Izzo (H.O.V.A.) Unplugged

‘H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A…’

Izzo (H.O.V.A.). It’s a classic Jay-Z single, from his original the Blueprint and produced by a then unknown Kanye West. It’s a solid song.

But the other day I discovered this version, which appeared on MTV’s Unplugged from 2001. Here he’s backed by the Roots. It’s fluid, very natural, it’s acoustic yet electric. And it’s amazing. Thanks to my friend Ali who turned me on to this gem I somehow missed for nearly 15 years.

‘That’s the anthem, get your damn hands up.’

Here’s the whole Unplugged set.

  1. I never much had the desire to listen/watch to the Jay-Z unplugged session. Not sure why. But I’m glad you posted this because that version of H.O.V.A. sounds great, especially with that female vocalist.
