#TBT: Depeche Mode, Policy of Truth

March 19, 1990 was the day Depeche Mode’s Violator was unleashed upon the unsuspecting world.

Easily the band’s finest full length and the crown jewel in their collection, the album is from beginning to end brilliant. Whether it’s the electro burst of sensuality of World In My Eyes, the ache and longing of album centerpiece Enjoy The Silence, or the synchronized dance floor vibrancy of lead off single Personal Jesus, the hits kept coming.

The third single, Policy of Truth, has a sinister and dark edge that resonates with me. The line “Never again is what you swore the time before” is a bracing refrain, but epitomizes the song’s theme of honesty versus deception. The song went to number one on Billboards’ Modern Rock Tracks chart.

From 25 years ago this month, this is Depeche Mode.
