Ben Gibbard of Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie fame just released a new album. Without knowoing anything about it, I was intrigued by the name, as it is called Bandwagonesque, which was the title of Teenage Fanclub’s breakthrough album back in 1991.
Lo and behold, it’s a song by song cover album of the Teenage Fanclub album, which is Gibbard’s favorite album of all time.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s nothing revolutionary. In fact, it’s a almost by rote cover album, with a few exceptions. But it reminds me of what a great album Teenage Fanclub released, and how seamlessly Gibbard had reintroduced the songs to this decade.
Bravo to Gibbard to doing a straight forward cover album and doing it justice, and basically keeping the joy of the original intact. It’s definitely music for the nostagic to love, and for new listeners, listen to Gibbard’s versions, but then go back to the originals too.
